$2,000 Annual Drug Spending Cap

The Inflation Reduction Act, passed in 2022, paved the way for notable changes in the Medicare program, with the latest measure starting next year. From 2025, Medicare will cap annual out-of-pocket drug spending at $2,000 and eliminate the prescription drug "doughnut hole." You will pay a $590 deductible (an increase from $545 in 2024). After reaching the deductible, you'll cover 25% of drug costs until hitting the $2,000 cap. Once this limit is reached, you’ll benefit from catastrophic coverage, incurring no further drug costs. According to CMS, this adjustment could save Medicare beneficiaries a total of $7.4 billion annually and individual savings averaging nearly $400 per person.

Possible Changes in Part D Plan Premiums

While the new $2,000 cap provides savings to many, some beneficiaries might see premium increases. Medicare's Part D encompasses standalone plans solely for drug coverage and Medicare Advantage plans that include drug coverage with other health services. Changes in premiums, formularies, copays, or deductibles may occur as insurers address increased costs with limited government payments. However, the Part D premium stabilization demonstration aims to curb premium hikes, capping monthly increases at $35 for 2024 and 2025. Meanwhile, CMS expects a reduction in the average Part D premium to $46.50 in 2025 from $53.95 in 2024.

Option for Spreading Drug Costs

Starting in 2025, Medicare drug plans will allow enrollees to distribute their out-of-pocket costs across monthly payments rather than paying full amounts at pharmacies. By opting into the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, your drug costs will be billed monthly by your Medicare Advantage or standalone Part D plan without additional fees.

Increase in Part B Premium and Deductible

Medicare Part B costs will rise in 2025, with the monthly premium set to increase to $185 from $174.70, and the annual deductible to $257 from $240. These adjustments affect all beneficiaries, regardless of their Medicare plan type. Nonetheless, assistance programs can ease these expenses for low-income beneficiaries.
