Eligibility for a Lift Chair

Medicare may cover the seat lift mechanism of a lift chair if certain criteria are fulfilled:

1. Medicare Coverage: You must have either Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) or a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C). If your Medicare benefits are via a Medicare Advantage Plan, consult your insurer about coverage specifics, costs, and approved suppliers for obtaining a lift chair.

2. Certificate of Medical Necessity: Arrange an appointment with your physician to secure a prescription confirming the medical necessity of the lift chair. Ensure sections B and D are filled out on the “Certificate of Medical Necessity for Seat Lift Mechanisms form” (CMS-849).

3. Establishing Medical Necessity: The lift chair's seat lift mechanism may qualify as medically necessary under these conditions:

- The patient suffers from severe arthritis in the hip or knee or a severe neuromuscular disorder.

- The patient is unable to stand up from a regular chair unaided.

- Once standing, the patient can walk independently or with a walker/cane; direct transfer to a wheelchair might disqualify coverage.

- The seat lift mechanism is part of the physician’s treatment plan to improve or prevent deterioration of the patient’s condition.

4. Medicare-Participating Suppliers: Ensure your lift chair is purchased from a Medicare-participating supplier that accepts assignment; otherwise, Medicare will not cover the cost.

Conclusion

Lift chairs offer seniors improved mobility and comfort, promoting independence with features catered to individual needs. From sleek designs to advanced positioning technology, these options highlight the best in lift chair functionality.
