Essential Oils Used for Relaxation Could Have Negative Health Effects

The essential oils widely utilized in spas, massage clinics, and households for their calming effects might not be as beneficial as previously thought. According to research conducted in Taiwan and published in the European Journal of Preventative Cardiology, the pleasant scents used for relaxation at the end of a hectic day could pose risks to heart health if exposure exceeds one hour.

The study observed 100 spa employees who were regularly exposed to bergamot oil vapor, an essential oil praised for its digestive benefits, anti-infection properties, and ability to alleviate anxiety, stress, and depression. Findings indicated that these workers showed elevated blood pressure and heart rate after being exposed to the oil for an hour.

The researchers concluded that extended exposure to essential oils beyond an hour could potentially jeopardize cardiovascular health, especially for individuals working in spa environments.
